pension will be so small that I cannot see my way to retir-
-ing on that date, in view of my five children, whose edu-
-cation will not be completed. I shall therefore have to
continue serving. Indeed, the many deductions which have
been made during the past. two years from my Colonial allow-
-ance, in contravention of the Treasury Circulars of 1914,
and of the assurances I received in 1915 from the Hongkong
Government, the Colonial Office, and the Admiralty, have
so adversely affected my income that I am seriously consi-
-dering an application to return to ay Colonial post now,
before the termination of the war, as I find that I cannot
afford the enormously increased cost of supporting my
family in this country on a reluced income.
